A medical device called an oropharyngeal airway, sometimes referred to as a Guedel airway, is used in airway management to keep or open a patient’s airway by keeping the tongue from covering the epiglottis, which could obstruct breathing.
As an adjunct to help maintain an open airway, it is a stiff plastic tube that runs along the upper part of the mouth and finishes at the base of the tongue.
